![]() I want one app to use instead of four web apps. Like I said earlier, I am pulling in iCloud and multiple Google Workspace email accounts into one app, so using webmail isn’t something I want to do. When it comes to my “heavy lifting” type of work, I can get it done much faster on my Mac. On the desktop, we’re moving everything to the web.Īs much as I love iOS, If you told me that I had to pick between the Mac and iOS, I’d choose the Mac. I think a lot of it has to do with iOS, where native apps are the default. I am bringing in multiple accounts into one app (personal iCloud and multiple Google Workspace accounts), but another aspect is that I prefer native apps. In the early days of email usage, I preferred using web-based mail, but as time went on, I preferred app-based email. ![]() One of the things about my use of email that is most surprising is that I’ve gone in the reverse direction compared to how technology has moved. Over the years, managing multiple Google accounts has become cumbersome. It’s a much smoother solution than running multiple tabs. It’s a native macOS app for Gmail, and it supports G-Suite as well. If you have a few Gmail accounts, and are happy with the Gmail web interface, check out Boxy. I stuck with it during the disaster that was MobileMe and finally arrived at iCloud.īefore I look at the various email apps for Mac, I want to mention one other app that might appeal to Google Workspace and Gmail users. I switched to Gmail in 2004 when it first launched, and I finally switched to Mac in 2005 when I got my first Mac (a Powerbook G4). I switched to Mailblocks around 2002 (it was eventually acquired by AOL). I stuck with AOL until I got an account when my parents first got high-speed Internet. I got my first email account in the mid–90s (When it was still $2.95 per hour for AOL). So what’s the best email app for the Mac? Even with the popularity of web-based services like Gmail, many still prefer a desktop app to pull in multiple email addresses, use desktop plugins, and have a more native Mac experience. Signing up for almost any service on the Internet requires an email address, so it’s a universal digital identifier. Signing into iCloud (and email) is one of my first tasks when setting up a new Mac. Despite all the new messaging services, project management tools, and chat-based ecosystems, email remains essential. ![]()

It also means you can edit the audio by dragging the edges to make it shorter, tapping the Split option to cut pieces out, or even apply the Background setting, which reduces the volume so that you can overlay new audio while retaining the ambience of the recording. This will allow you to edit the audio separate to the rest of the video. If you tap on Detach, iMovie will separate the audio from the video clip. We’ll mention this here because it’s an option you might have seen while you were editing the length of your clip: Detach. MIDI gives you flexibility and is forgiving in the recording process. Or say you record 4 chords and find out later that you want to change one of the chords. Say you record a 4 bar loop and accidentally record a wrong note. This is a game changer for producers! No more having to land a perfect take.Īnd now you can switch up certain sections at will. In FL Studio you can lengthen or shorten notes, move notes around, add or delete a note, and even quantize entire sections (more on quantizing in the next section). Record in the next layer with kick and snare, then add in bass, and so on till you have all the parts of your song fleshed out.Īnother strength of MIDI is the ability to go back to your track and manipulate notes. Hit record, and move on to the next element of the song. So if you’re new to producing, start out with your core, foundational instrument like a piano part or synth loop. It can take years to master if you’re just starting out. MIDI is truly where you can express your sound in whatever way you want. The most famous engines include Omnisphere, Native Instruments, and Output. Other instruments like a drum kit will only have 10 to 30 different sounds and will only be triggered by the first set of keys, respectively.Īlternatively, you can purchase a wide range of sound engines and load third-party plugins into FL Studio. Some instruments will be full scale, and can be triggered by any MIDI key on your controller. One beautiful thing about MIDI is that it lets you load and trigger any sound imaginable.įL Studio comes pre-loaded with synths, bass presets, drum samples, keyboards, and much more. There are tons of advantages to using MIDI versus traditional audio. This allows you to record individual MIDI notes from the controller. You can select one of these, or add a new channel.įL Studio should automatically recognize your MIDI controller and select the source for you.īefore recording the MIDI part, right click on the record button and double check that “Notes” is checked off. Most FL Studio projects will already have a mixer created with multiple channels. ![]() ![]() With your MIDI device connected, you’re halfway there to producing beats. Once your controller is connected and powered, hover over “MIDI Settings” in FL Studio and make sure the device is being seen and registered by FL Studio.
